Instructions
Bird Feeder
Method:
- Cut the pointed end of the ice cream cone off about 1/2 cm.
- Spread a tbsp of peanut butter around each cone.
- Roll the cone in the bird seed.
- Cut a piece of string to the desired length and tie a knot to sit in the pointed end and hang from a tree or bush and enjoy bird watching.
Chefs Tip:
Toilet rolls also work perfectly well for this and something children will love to do.
Bird Feeder Ornaments
Method:
- Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
- Spray the inside of your chosen cookie cutters with baking spray. Alternatively, grease with coconut oil. A thin coat of cooking spray or oil makes it easier to release the birdseed ornaments.
- Arrange the cookie cutters on the lined baking tray.
- In a pan, heat up the lard and peanut butter until melted.
- Stir in the bird seed, dried fruit and nuts.
- Mix until the dry ingredients are completely coated.
- Fill each cookie cutter with bird feeder mixture. Pack and press down tightly until the cutters are full.
- Poke a skewer into each ornament to make a hole for the ribbon.
- Let the ornaments dry for a couple of hours or overnight.
- Carefully press the birdseed ornaments out of the cookie cutters.
- String with a ribbon or twine for hanging.
Chefs Tip:
These can be made without dried fruit, simply increase the amount of bird seed from 300g to 400g.
