Appleby Creamery

Appleby Creamery was founded in 2008 by three former cheesemakers and friends from the old Express Dairy site in Appleby. The trio, Maurice, Alan and Bob decided to revive cheesemaking in Appleby with the help of Alan’s wife Ruth and Maurice’s wife, Sandra.

They visited a cheese school in Wester Ross to develop their knowledge of soft cheese production as most of their existing expertise was in hard cheese. Initially, the cheese was sold by a group of farmers who supplied the milk which evolved into the team using organic milk from Frank Morphet, and so the original organic brie was born.

Appleby Creamery has an array of solar panels which covers the whole roof and can generate 188kW which could supply around 15 large houses. Approximately half of the energy generated is used in the cheese making process and the other half is sold back to the National grid, in less than a year they have ‘planted’ the equivalent of 75 trees!

The brand supports local organisations where possible through raffle prizes but also has a dedicated charity partner, Hospice at Home, Cumbria and North Lakes.

They have won many awards for their cheeses but their most popular is the Eden Smokie, a delicately smoked Eden Valley Brie which won awards at the International Cheese Awards, Great Yorkshire Show and Great Taste Awards last year!
